I volunteer to teach art and music appreciation at my daughters’ elementary school.  My youngest daughter is in first grade, and I recently had the pleasure of conducting a lesson about Andy Warhol in her classroom.

Teaching the concept of pop art to six-year-olds was extremely amusing.  As they recognized the popular images immortalized by Warhol’s art, almost every hand in the room shot up.  They all wanted to tell me about their favorite type of soup, how much money they had saved up in their piggy banks, and about their vacations to Disney World.

We followed up with an art project involving Campbell’s soup labels.  We listened to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground as the children worked.  However, when the David Bowie song “Andy Warhol” came on, one boy asked me to turn off the music because it was distracting him from his project.  I teased that the music was meant to inspire him, but he just looked at me like I was nuts.
